Introduction

A college biology tutor is a professional who provide tutoring sessions to college students who study biology. The major work of the tutor is to facilitate learning in order to coach the students to be successful and independent citizens in the future. The main purpose of tutoring biology in colleges is to enhance, improve and increase mastery of biology concepts. Biology tutors should be able to integrate effective studying strategy as a means of maximizing the students’ focus and potential for academic progress. Oftentimes, the tutor should contact the instructor of the course to give information on how the students are fairing on. Furthermore, the tutors have the mandate to refer their students to college resources both in the department and outside. The main reason for doing this is to enable the students has a wider scope on the subject.


Duties of a college biology tutor

1. To tutor students in the biology subject and lay down various learning strategies in order to promote independent learning among the students. In this regard, learning can be administered in groups or on a one-to-one basis. The tutor can either lecture in class or guide the students to perform various practical in the biology laboratory. Biology usually concentrates on human anatomy and the environment and therefore, the tutor must engage the students in discussions to enhance understanding.

2. To meet with the respective instructor of the course in order to obtain information about the course. The information obtained will serve as a guidance that will assist in effective tutoring. The instructor will also be able to take the tutor around the college for students to know his or her availability.

3. Developing handouts and other instructional materials to enable the students to do further reading. The tutor must also ensure that projects assigned by the director of the course are completed on time. This ensures that the biology department as well as the entire department runs smoothly.

4. To supervise exams and assignments on the subject. This ensures that the students’ academic progress is closely monitored. Additionally, the tutor must also make referrals to other campus resources where possible.

5. Maintain an accurate weekly schedule on students’ progress as well as lecture hours. These schedules should be submitted to the director on time. Furthermore, the tutor should also complete time-sheets on bi-weekly basis and submit them to the secretary of the department as soon as possible.

Qualifications for the position of a college biology tutor


Generally, the tutor should demonstrate an ability to establish a strategy that enhances communication with the students. In the academic front, the tutor ought to have completed a course in biology or in any other related field and attaining best grades. A verified recommendation form from two or more professors from previous college or university is mandatory. The tutor must also exhibit impeccable communication skills to enhance the ease of relating well with students and the entire personnel in the college. Finally, it is suggested that any college biology teacher must exhibit professional and appropriate behavior at any other time.
